How to Select the Correct Hydraulic Hose for Your Application

How to Select the Correct Hydraulic Hose for Your Application

Choosing the right hydraulic hose is about much more than finding one that fits. The wrong choice can lead to premature failure, costly downtime, oil spills, damaged equipment, and severe safety hazards. Selecting the correct hose ensures your hydraulic system operates safely, efficiently, and reliably.

Where to Start?

Not every hydraulic hose is created equally. Some excel at extreme pressures, others offer superior temperature or chemical resistance, while some prioritise flexibility or abrasion resistance. These varying capabilities are defined by their applicable hose standard and/or manufacturer.

Selecting a hose is always a trade-off between strengths and weaknesses:

  • High pressure, lower flexibility: A heavy-duty hose like the 100R15 handles extreme pressure but comes with flexibility limitations.
  • High flexibility, lower pressure: A light, flexible hose like the 100R1 bends easily, but has a lower pressure rating.

Understanding the requirements of your specific application is critical. To make the selection process simple and consistent, use the S.T.A.M.P.E.D method.

What is S.T.A.M.P.E.D?

S.T.A.M.P.E.D is a practical framework that covers every essential factor you need to evaluate before choosing a hose assembly.

S – Size

Accurate dimensions are critical to system performance:

  • Inside Diameter (ID): An undersized ID restricts fluid flow, causing overheating and pressure drops.
  • Outside Diameter (OD): Essential for routing through tight spaces or brackets.
  • Overall Length (OAL): Ensures the final assembly fits properly without excess slack or tension.

T – Temperature

You must account for both the fluid temperature inside the hose and the ambient temperature outside. Extreme temperatures break down rubber compounds rapidly.

Taipan Tip: Standard hoses carry a 100R designation (e.g. 100R2), while our high-temperature versions include a H in the part number (e.g. 100R2H).

A – Application

Ask yourself: where is the hose going, and what is it doing?

Looking only at pressure ratings is a common mistake. For example, our 100R19 is a highly flexible 2-wire hose rated at 4,000 PSI. On paper, it seems like a great swap for a 4-wire 100R12, which is also rated at 4,000 PSI. However, in high-impulse applications like drive motors or hydraulic hammers, the 100R19 will fail much faster than the 100R12 or our TX4000/TX6000 ranges, which are specifically built to absorb violent pressure spikes.

P – Pressure

Always confirm the system’s maximum operating pressure – including potential pressure surges – and choose a hose that matches or exceeds it. Remember: picking a hose with a higher pressure rating than required often sacrifices bend radius and flexibility.

E – Ends

Identify the end connections (threads, flanges, or elbows) and select the correct fitting style:

  • Crimp hose tails
  • Field-attachable tails
  • Low-pressure suction tails
  • Push-on tails

Each style performs differently depending on the pressure, fluid, and environment.

D – Do You?

A final check to ensure long-term reliability: Do you need to do anything else for this assembly?

For example, did the old hose show wear marks? Consider adding abrasion sleeving or spiral guard.

Will it be exposed to intense heat? Add fire sleeve protection.

Taking this extra step protects the hose, prevents repeat failures, and delivers a better solution every time.

In Closing

Selecting the correct hydraulic hose isn’t about finding a quick fix; it’s about making an informed decision that protects machinery, the environment, and most importantly – lives. Using S.T.A.M.P.E.D guarantees that pressure, temperature, flexibility, and environmental factors are all working in harmony. Treat every hose replacement as an opportunity to upgrade system reliability, avoid spills, and keep you or your client’s operation running smoothly.
